The king’s good graces had been restored for Handel to enjoy. The occasion for this piece d’occasion was a trendy aquatic fete the evening of July 17 on the “silver Thames” (Spenser).

Handel’s Water Music is a collection of three suites for orchestra. Our listening piece from this larger work is “Alla Hornpipe,” the 2nd movement from the Suite in D major. It is a perfect example of Handel’s emphasis on the louder, brass instruments that is heard throughout Water Music.

As a composer, Harty's best-known works from this period are his lavish reorchestrations of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Harty was knighted in 1925.
